Valentine's Day, filled with all of its frills and sweetness, offers kids a chance to be very creative! This Valentine's Day card can be customized countless ways so that no two cards are alike-perfect for classroom sharing!
Here are the basic instructions to make a card, along with customization ideas.
Materials needed:
Paper, either white or colored construction paper
Crayons, markers, colored pencils or paints
Glue
Scissors
(Optional) letter stencils or stickers, downloadable template
1. Download the heart templates but please don't stress if you don't have a printer. Just have children draw a heart shape on either white or colored construction paper, and then another slightly larger scalloped heart shape on either white or colored construction paper. You'll want the scalloped heart to be about one inch bigger around than the plain heart. You'll also want the scalloped heart to be a different color than the plain heart. Children can either color or paint the hearts different colors or cut the hearts from two different colors of construction paper. Also, children can vary the size of the hearts. If the template provided is too small or too large, encourage them to draw a smaller or larger version, thus making their own template. This is a fun way to get children to practice their drawing skills.
2. Decorate the plain heart by either coloring it in or adding a personalized message such as "Be Mine", "Be My Valentine" or "You Have My Heart" using alphabet stickers or stencils or by simply writing a message with crayons, markers or colored pencils.
3. Cut the heart shapes out along the solid lines.
4. Glue the smaller plain heart to the center of the scalloped heart. Let glue dry.
5. Decorate the scalloped border with paints, colored pencils or markers if desired.
Remember, this is a stress-free activity! Use whatever materials you have on hand. If you only have notebook paper, use notebook paper! If you have a well-stocked craft room, dig out the ribbon and glitter and lace and incorporate those things into your hearts. Make multiple hearts of various sizes to fill up the Valentine mailbox at school. Crafting shouldn't be stressful. It should be fun and rewarding and a chance to explore creativity.
Happy Valentine's Day!
